Dr. Meihoefer was
born in Bohemia in 1944 while her family was fleeing
from the devastation of World War II. She was
only seven when her family moved to the United
States. Growing up as a child of an immigrant
family starting over with scant resources in a
new culture, she developed both a deep commitment
to progressive social change and an entrepreneurial
spirit. Both of these characteristics were behind
Dr. Meihoefer’s founding of Möbius Publishing.
The entrepreneurial spirit led her to found a
company to implement her goals. Her commitment
to progressive social change helped shape her
decision that the company would offer critically
needed mathematics and statistics textbooks. Dr.
Meihoefer died in January of 2002. Today, although
we have lost the advantage of her daily participation,
Möbius continues its commitment to quality
educational products that expand the horizons
of young people.
Möbius was formed to sell a line of mathematics and statistics textbooks.
Today the company has evolved into a specialty publisher concentrating on inovative and effective statistics
education products. In particular, the company has worked in cooperation with software developers at West
Virginia University in the development of advanced statistical software that allows students to gain exposure
to the mathematical tools statisticians use and master the concepts they can apply for problem solving. In the
process, demanding core ideas come alive. These include variability, the central limit theorem, and hypothesis
testing. Students develop statistical intuition as they conduct large-scale simulations. In a world that is
increasingly dependent on statistical sophistication, Möbius products help prepare today's students
for the future.
